The Chemicals segment is operated through its majority control of Kronos Worldwide, Inc. (Kronos). Kronos is a global producer and marketer of value-added titanium dioxide pigment (TiO2). TiO2, which imparts whiteness, brightness and opacity, is used for various manufacturing applications, including coatings, plastics, paper, fibers, food, ceramics, cosmetics, and other industrial products. The company also mines ilmenite, the raw material used in the production of TiO2, in Norway.
The company produces approximately 40 different TiO2 grades, sold under its Kronos trademark. Its major customers include domestic and international paint, plastics and paper manufacturers. Directly and through its distributors and agents, the company sells and provides technical services for its products to approximately 4,000 customers in approximately 100 countries, with the majority of its sales in Europe and North America.
The company produces TiO2 in two crystalline forms: rutile and anatase. Rutile TiO2 is manufactured using both a chloride production process and a sulfate production process, whereas anatase TiO2 is only produced using a sulfate production process.
The company manufactures and sells iron-based chemicals, which are co-products and processed co-products of sulfate and chloride process TiO2 pigment production. These co-product chemicals are marketed through its Ecochem division, and are used primarily as treatment and conditioning agents for industrial effluents and municipal wastewater, as well as in the manufacture of iron pigments, cement, and agricultural products.
The company also manufactures and sells titanium oxychloride and titanyl sulfate, which are side-stream specialty products from the production of TiO2. Titanyl sulfate products are used in pearlescent pigments, natural gas pipe, and other specialty applications.
Ti02 Manufacturing Joint Venture
The company holds a 50% interest in a manufacturing joint venture with a subsidiary of Huntsman Corporation (Huntsman). The joint venture owns and operates a chloride process TiO2 facility in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
