Triphenylphosphine (Triphenyl phosphine, Phosphine, triphenyl-, Triphenylphosphorus, 603-35-0, Triphenylphosphane, Triphenylphosphide, Phosphorustriphenyl) refers to an organophosphorus compound with the molecular formula C18H15P. Triphenylphosphine exists as a colorless or white, odorless solid that is almost insoluble in water but dissolves in such non-polar organic solvents as diethyl ether and benzene. Triphenylphosphine is also soluble in ethanol, methanol, toluene and acetone. The boiling point of triphenylphosphine is 377 В°C. The product is combustible, highly flammable and reacts vigorously with oxidizing materials.

Triphenylphosphine is prepared by the reaction of chlorobenzene with phosphorus trichloride and molten sodium and by the treatment of phosphorus trichloride with phenylmagnesium bromide or phenyllithium.

Triphenylphosphine is utilized in the synthesis of organic and organometallic compounds. The product is widely used in the production of pesticides, epoxy resins hardeners, paints and other industrial chemicals. Triphenylphosphine is also used in the synthesis of vitamins and production of pharmaceuticals, crop protection products and coatings.

Triphenylphosphine causes eyes and skin irritation, skin sensitization. The product also can cause dyspnea and entail neurotoxic effects.
