Trichlorosilane (Trichlorosilyl, Silicochloroform, Silane, trichloro-, Trichloromonosilane, silane, trichloro) is an inorganic compound with the molecular formula HSiCl3. Trichlorosilane is a colorless volatile liquid with an acrid smell of hydrogen chloride. The liquid with the molecular weight 134.44 dissolves in benzene, carbon disulfide, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride. The boiling point of trichlorosilane is 32-34 В°C. Trichlorosilane is processed by the reaction between powdered silicon with blowing hydrogen chloride at 300В°C.

Trichlorosilane is characterized as highly flammable, harmful and corrosive compound. The product causes discomfort and/or pain in eyes, tearing and blinking. Brief contact of trichlorosilane with skin will produce itching, discomfort, redness, ulceration or possible swelling. Moreover, the product cause serious burns, swelling or pain in the mouth, burns of throat, esophagus, and stomach. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, faintness, thirst, and coma are also amongst the potential side effects of trichlorosilane. Inhalation of low vapor concentrations of the product will produce excess sputum, runny nose, difficulty with breathing, irritation of nose, throat and chest. Higher concentrations of trichlorosilane may cause the injury of the nasal passages. Repeated contact will cause nose and gums to bleed, and will discolor and erode the teeth.

Trichlorosilane is utilized in the manufacture of organosilicon compounds as a raw material and/or intermediate. Furthermore, the product is used in the processing of silicone polymers and resins; silicon for the semiconductor industry. Trichlorosilane is widely used in the synthesis of silicon-containing organic compounds because of a high reactivity and wide availability of trichlorosilane.
