Trichloroethylene (also known as triciene, narcogen, trilene, ethinyl trichloride, threthylen, threthylene, benzinol, etc.) is a chlorinated hydrocarbon with the molecular formula C2HCl3.
Trichloroethylene is an industrially produced chemical, and it does not occur in the environment. The chemical is a clear, colorless or dyed pale blue liquid with a sweet, chloroform-like odor. The odor evaporates easily. The liquid is nonflammable and volatile. The boiling point of trichloroethylene is 87.2oC.
Trichloroethylene was first produced in the year of 1925 in the USA, and prior to 1977 it was applied as an anesthetic and an inhaled obstetrical analgesic.
Currently, the majority of trichloroethylene is produced from ethylene that is chlorinated over a ferric chloride catalyst to obtain 1,2-dichloroethane. Then, 1,2-dichloroethane is converted to trichloroethylene being heated at the temperature of about 400 °C with the addition of chlorine.
Trichloroethylene has numerous applications, mainly in the chemical, textile, furniture, electrical, automotive industries and other miscellaneous industries. The chemical is extensively utilized as a metal degreaser (over 30% of all trichloroethylene). Besides, trichloroethylene is applied in correction fluid, paint, spot removers, carpet-cleaning fluids, metal cleaners and varnishes production. Moreover, the chemical is a component of some textile manufacturing process. Over 65% of the totally produced trichloroethylene is used for the manufacture of hydrofluorocarbon. The chlorinated hydrocarbon is also used to produce semiconductors.
Trichloroethylene is irritating for skin, eyes, and for digestive, respiratory tracts. Central nervous system effects, abnormal fatigue, irritability, headache, gastric disturbances, and intolerance to alcohol, liver and kidney damage are some of the side effects caused by above normal levels of exposure to trichloroethylene.
