Tetrodotoxin is a strong neurotoxin that has no antidote. The neurotoxin is obtained from several kinds of fish such as pufferfish, triggerfish, porcupinefish, mola, etc. Tetrodotoxin exists as a white solid with the molecular formula C11H17N3O8 and molecular weight 319.26. The product is soluble in dilute acetic acid, slightly soluble in dry alcohol and ether and almost insoluble in other organic solvents.

This neurotoxin influences the nervous system, produces neurologic and gastrointestinal problems, lowers blood pressure, causes dysrhythmias, stops sending electrical impulses to the brain. Nausea, weakness, paralysis, vomiting, breathing difficulty, muscle spasms are amid the most common signs of tetrodotoxin poisoning. Approximately half of tetrodotoxin poisonings end with death. The product causes acute irritation of eyes, skin, the respiratory and digestive tract. Besides, ingestion of tetrodotoxin may result in salivation, convulsions, pulmonary edema, numbness, tingling of the lips, etc.

Tetrodotoxin finds its main application in medicine. It is used to treat ischemic damage of the brain. Tetrodotoxin is also used as an effective potential pain relief and a possible treatment for cancer-associated pain.

Tetrodotoxin market is covered in the study Tetrodotoxin (CAS 4368-28-9) Market Research Report 2023. The report encompasses proper description of the product, unveils application areas, and briefly summarizes patents in the sphere. It overlooks tetrodotoxin market situation, names manufacturers, suppliers as well as users. The report also provides current tetrodotoxin prices in the market.
