Sulfur hexafluoride (Elegas, Sulfur fluoride, SonoVue) refers to an inorganic, non-flammable greenhouse gas with the molecular formula F6S. Sulfur hexafluoride is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas with the molecular gas with the molecular weight 146.05. The boiling point of sulfur hexafluoride is -63.8 0C. The product is very slightly soluble in water, but dissolves in ethanol, ether and alcohol. Sulfur hexafluoride can be prepared from the elements through exposure of S8 to F2. Sulfur hexafluoride can also be manufactured by direct fluorination of sulfur or sulfur dioxide, by combining sulfur vapor and pure elemental fluorine.

Sulfur hexafluoride is utilized in electromechanical equipment; in the microwave and radar equipment; for insulation of nuclear particle accelerators and X-ray equipment; for thermoacoustic insulation of windows; for meteorology and medical uses related to its inertness. Furthermore, the product is used for treatment with plasma containing SF6 for etching silicon or for increasing the water repellency of a wet strength of kraft paper; for protection of molten magnesium in the magnesium industry. Moreover, sulfur hexafluoride is utilized in experiments to test infiltration rates, and ventilation efficiency.

The product causes eye and respiratory tract irritation. Prolonged exposure can cause frostbite injuries. Air hunger and cyanosis are also amid potential side effects of sulfur hexafluoride.
