Sodium nitrate (Chile saltpeter, sodium salt, soda niter, sodium saltpeter, Nitrate, etc.) refers to a chemical compound with the molecular formula NNaO3 and molecular weight 84.99. The product is a colorless, odorless solid with a saline, bitter taste. Sodium nitrate easily dissolves in water, ammonia and alcohol. Boiling point of sodium nitrate is 380 В°C. Industrially, sodium nitrate is prepared by the reaction between nitric acid and Na2CO3 solutions, and by the reaction of ammonium nitrate and sodium hydroxide.

Sodium nitrate is widely used in various substances such as enamels, rocket fuel, fertilizers, explosives. Sodium nitrate, due to its antimicrobial properties, is utilized in food products. The compound inhibits the poisoning of food and adds meat a red color. Sodium nitrate can be found in pesticide gas cartridges, fireworks, fertilizers. Being the first listed ingredient in fertilizers, the product raises the level of nitrogen in the soil and inhibits soil erosion.
