Sodium cyanide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula NaCN. Sodium cyanide is prepared by the direct reaction of hydrogen cyanide with alkali, by heating sodium amide with carbon or by melting sodium chloride with calcium cyanamide. It is a white solid, soluble in water and aqueous solutions and slightly soluble in alcohol; it gives off a faint almonds odor. Sodium cyanide has a melting point of 564°C and a boiling point of 1,496°C. When treated with acid, sodium cyanide forms the toxic gas – hydrogen cyanide.

Sodium cyanide is principally used in mining of gold and other precious metals given the high reactivity of the element towards metals. Approximately 78% of the overall sodium cyanide output is used in gold mining. It is also used as a chemical feedstock, as some commercially important compounds are derived from sodium cyanide, for instance, cyanuric chloride, cyanogen chloride and many nitriles. As sodium cyanide is considered to be a strong nucleophile, it is required in organic synthesis to prepare nitriles occurring in several specialty chemicals including pharmaceuticals. Sodium cyanide has several niche application areas such as illegal fishing as well as dyes, agrochemicals and electroplating industries.
