Propylene carbonate (PC) is a colorless and odorless liquid organic compound with the chemical formula C4H6O3. It is soluble in alcohol, water, ether and acetone. Furthermore, it can be mixed with chloroform, benzene, acetone and ethyl acetate. PC melts at nearly -49 °C and boils 242 °C.
Propylene carbonate is extensively used in a wide range of syntheses and applications as a polar or aprotic solvent. The product can also be used in some chemical processes, for instance, hydroxyalkyation, carbamate formation, transesterification, etc. Both alone and combined with other solvents, PC is effectively used as a cleaner for a hard surface, fiberglass, resin, polyurethane and polyester.
Also, propylene carbonate is approved as an indirect food additive and, moreover, is safe as an ingredient for cosmetics. Owing to such properties as high polarity and high donor capability, PC is widely used in the production of lithium batteries. Given the nontoxic characteristics propylene carbonate is used in the manufacture of paint strippers as well as nail polish removers. It is also used as a plasticizer.
The companies active on the propylene carbonate market include but are not limited to BASF SE, Sigma Aldrich Chemie GmbH, Connect Chemicals GmbH, Laiwu Hehui Chemical Co., Depew Fine Chemical Co., Mengen Chemicals, Shandong Depp Chemical Technology Co., Shinghwa Chemical Corp., LyondellBasell, Mytech Specialty Chemicals, Spectrum Chemical Mfg. Corp., and Sigma-Aldrich Corp.
