  • 2-Methyl-1-propene homopolymer
  • Polyisobutylene
CAS#:9003-27-4
Formula:C4H8
Molecular Weight:56.11

Polyisobutylene (Propene, 2-methyl-, polymers; 1-Propene,-2-methyl-, homopolymer; 2-Methyl-1-propene, homopolymer; Polyisobutene; 2-Methylpropene polymer; HSDB 1260; Isobutene homopolymer; Isobutene polymer; Isobutylene) is a synthetic rubber, or elastomer that was first developed in early 1940s.

Polyisobutylene is a colorless to light yellow viscoelastic, odorless, tasteless material with the molecular formula C4H8. The product may exhibit a slight characteristic odor. Polyisobutylene is insoluble in water, alcohol and other polar solvents. Structurally, polyisobutylene is similar to polyethylene and polypropylene. The product is produced by cationic vinyl polymerization from the monomer isobutylene. Polyisobutylene is flexible at ambient temperature and thermally stable. The product, being chemically inert, exhibits excellent resistance to oxidative and thermal degradation.

Polyisobutylene is a commercially significant polymer and has numerous applications. It is utilized in the production of pressure sensitive and hot melt adhesives as a permanent flexibilizer and tackifier. Polyisobutylene is used in the manufacturing of adhesives, agricultural chemicals, fiber optic compounds, caulks and sealants, cling film, electrical fluids, lubricants, paper and pulp, personal care products, pigment concentrates. Furthermore, it is utilized as a gasoline or diesel fuel additive, and even in chewing gum.

Irritation of eyes and skin, and of digestive and respiratory tracts is amid the most common potential health hazards of polyisobutylene.

Polyisobutylene market is covered in the study Polyisobutylene (CAS 9003-27-4) Market Research Report 2023. The report encompasses proper description of the product, unveils application areas, and briefly summarizes patents in the sphere. It overlooks polyisobutylene market situation, names manufacturers, suppliers as well as users. The report also provides current polyisobutylene prices in the market.
