Polyethylene glycol (PEG), a.k.a. glycol alcohol, 1,2-ethanediol, ethane-1,2-diol, macrogol, etc. is a chemical compound composed of repeating ethylene glycol units. PEG is a white, odorless viscous liquid to a waxy solid. The molecular formula of the product is C2H6O2. Polyethylene glycol is soluble in a raft of organic solvents. PEG's solubility in aromatic hydrocarbons is high. However, polyethylene glycol is slightly soluble in hydrocarbons. PEG is insoluble in hexane and diethyl ether.
Polyethylene glycol is produced by polymerization of ethylene oxide with water, mono ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol in the presence of acidic or basic catalysts.
PEG is very effective in pharmaceutical, biological and chemical settings due to its chemical properties. Polyethylene glycol is non-toxic, non-immunogenic, hydrophilic and highly flexible.
Polyethylene glycol is widely used in medicine in eye drops, in the production of tablets, lubricants and external creams. Besides, PEG is used in the cosmetics industry and to manufacture such personal care products as powders, sticks, creams, etc. Furthermore,
polyethylene glycol can be found in soaps, cleaners, detergents. PEG is also utilized in the ceramics, tile, textile and adhesives industries.
Direct contact of PEG with eyes may lead to their transient discomfort, foreign body irritation, tearing and conjunctival redness. Swallowed polyethylene glycol may produce side effects in an individual. Excessive concentrations of inhaled product may be harmful for people with impaired respiratory function. Long term or repeated contact with PEG can produce changes in lung functions.
Polyethylene glycol (PEG) market is covered in the study Polyethylene Glycol (CAS 25322-68-3) Market Research Report 2023. The report encompasses proper description of the product, unveils application areas, and briefly summarizes patents in the sphere. It overlooks Polyethylene glycol (PEG) market situation, names manufacturers, suppliers as well as users. The report also provides current Polyethylene glycol (PEG) prices in the market.
