Peracetic acid (estosteril, ethaneperoxoic acid, peroxyacetic acid, acetic peroxide) is an organic peroxide (a mixture of acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide in a watery solution with the) molecular formula C2H4O3. Peracetic acid is a bright, colorless, clear liquid with a pungent smell and a low pH value (2,8). This organic peroxide is soluble in water and can be highly corrosive. However, peracetic acid is not corrosive to stainless steel and aluminium. Peracetic acid is stable and affective at pH values 1-9. The acid produces no foam and has a low surface tension.
Peracetic acid is produced by a reaction of hydrogen peroxide with acetic acid and by oxidation of acethaldehyde. Usual concentration of peracetic acid is from 5% to 15%. Degradation products of peracetic acid (hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid) that then fall into water, oxygen and carbon dioxide that are non-toxic and soluble in water.
Peracetic acid is an environmentally safe and powerful oxidant. Sanitizing properties of the product are higher and more affective if compared with chlorine, chlorine dioxide or quaternary products.
The acid is utilized as a cleanser and disinfectant in the food industry. The product easily deactivates a variety of pathogenic microorganisms, viruses and spores. Besides, peracetic acid is extensively used in medical facilities, agricultural premises and home bathrooms for disinfection. The product was registered for water purification. Peracetic acid is also applied for the epoxidation of various alkenes.
Peracetic acid can cause severe irritation and burns of eyes, skin and gastrointestinal tract. Nausea, vomiting, dizziness and suffocation are amid other potential health effects of peracetic acid.
