N-butanol, otherwise known as n-butyl alcohol, methylolpropane, 1-butanol, hydroxybutane, propylmethanol, etc., is a primary alcohol with a 4-carbon structure. It has the molecular formula C4H10O and molecular weight 74.12. N-butanol is a colorless liquid with strong characteristic and mildly alcoholic smell. The boiling point of n-butanol is 117.6 В°C. The product is very soluble in acetone and miscible with ethanol and ethyl ether.

Naturally n-butanol is produced by the fermentation of sugars and other carbohydrates and can be found in many beverages and foods. Industrially, the product is processed from the petrochemical feedstock propylene.
N-butanol is primarily used as raw material to produce other chemicals; as a solvent and ingredient in formulated products. Moreover, n-butanol is employed in the production of polymers, pharmaceuticals, herbicide esters, pyroxylin plastics, etc. Furthermore, the product is utilized in the manufacture of urea–formaldehyde and melamine–formaldehyde resins as a diluent/reactant. N-butanol can be found in coatings, fats, varnishes, hydraulic fluids, detergent formulations, cleaners, lipsticks, personal hygiene products, vitamins, drugs, etc. Besides, the product is employed in the manufacturing of gasoline.

N-butanol may cause severe irritation of eyes, skin, the respiratory tract. The contact of n-butanol with eyes may result in corneal edema, inflammation, blurred vision, tearing. Prolonged exposure to the skin may lead to its drying and cracking. Ingestion of n-butanol may produce central nervous system depression. The product may cause hearing abnormalities, muscle weakness, cardiovascular disturbances, etc. Overexposure to n-butanol may lead to the hepatic (liver) toxicity.

N-butanol market is covered in the study N-Butanol (CAS 71-36-3) Market Research Report 2023. The report encompasses proper description of the product, unveils application areas, and briefly summarizes patents in the sphere. It overlooks n-butanol market situation, names manufacturers, suppliers as well as users. The report also provides current n-butanol prices in the market.
