Product Name:Isoprene
Synonyms:
  • 2-Methyl-1,3-butadiene
CAS#:78-79-5
Formula:C5H8
Molecular Weight:68.12

Isoprene (2-Methylbutadiene, 2-Methyl-1,3-butadiene, 2-Methylbutadiene, 1,3-Butadiene, etc.) is an organic compound with the molecular formula C5H8 and molecular weight 68.11. Isoprene is a colorless volatile liquid with a mild and aromatic smell. The compound with the boiling point of 34 В°C is toxic and extremely flammable. Isoprene is miscible with acetone, ethanol, benzene, ethyl ether. The compound is produced by various trees such as poplars, oaks, eucalyptus into the atmosphere.

Isoprene can be produced by the industrial process of thermal decomposition of natural rubber. It is industrially available as a side product in the production of ethylene and as a byproduct of the thermal cracking of naphtha or oil.

The lion's share of all industrially produced isoprene is used to manufacture polyisoprene. Polyisoprene is utilized in the production of baby bottle nipples, medical equipment, tyres, threads for golf balls, etc. Isoprene is widely employed as a chemical intermediate or monomer in various applications. Moreover, the product can be found in paints, adhesives, coatings.

Isoprene can cause irritation of eyes and skin. The gastrointestinal irritation characterized by vomiting, diarrhea and nausea is a side effect of isoprene. Inhalation of the product can lead to the irritation of the respiratory tract, suffocation, asphyxiation or even depression of central nervous system. Laboratory studies with animals showed that the product can potentially produce cancer in humans.

Isoprene market is covered in the study Isoprene (CAS 78-79-5) Market Research Report 2023. The report encompasses proper description of the product, unveils application areas, and briefly summarizes patents in the sphere. It overlooks isoprene market situation, names manufacturers, suppliers as well as users. The report also provides current isoprene prices in the market.
