Hydroquinone, otherwise known as Eldoquin, p-Benzenediol, Phiaquin, hydroquinol, etc., is an aromatic organic compound with the molecular weight 110.11 and molecular formula C6H6O2. Hydroquinone exists as an odorless white solid that has a slightly bitter taste in aqueous solutions. Hydroquinone is easily soluble in carbon tetrachloride. The product has a melting point of 172-175 В°C, a flash point of 165 В°C and a boiling point of 285 В°C.

Hydroquinone occurs naturally as a product from animals and plants. It was found in the extracts of coffee beans, foods, in the leaves of such berries as cranberry, blueberry, etc. Furthermore, hydroquinone also occurs in bombardier beetle. Industrially, the product is prepared by three main methods, which are the dealkylation of benzene with propene, by hydroxylation of phenol, and by the oxidation of aniline by manganese dioxide (applied only in China).

Hydroquinone is widely used as a polymerization inhibitor, anti-oxidant ingredient for rubbers, a stabilizer in the coating industry and as a pigment. Besides, it is employed in agrochemicals and in photographic chemicals. Pure hydroquinone is potentially dangerous to human health and toxic to aquatic life. The product is considered to provoke genetic defects and cancer. Hydroquinone causes eyes and skin irritation, permanent eye injury, severe inflammation of the skin. The ingestion of the product may lead to nausea, irregular heartbeat, dark urine, abdominal pain, seizures, swelling, etc.
