Hydrazine hydrate (also called hydrazine monohydrate, hydrazinium hydroxide, hydrazine hydroxide, hydrazine) is a compound of hydrogen, nitrogen, and water, with molecular formula H2NNH2OH2O. It is a clear colorless liquid, melting at в€’51.7 В°C(lit.) and boiling at 120.1 В°C(lit.).

The industrial production of hydrazine hydrate is carried out by the Raschig, Bayer and Atochem processes.

Hydrazine hydrate is a highly effective reducing agent used in the synthesis of blowing agents; bio-active intermediates for agrochemical and pharmaceutical products; and other products including certain organic pigments for dyes, reagents for photography, urethanes and acrylics, hydrobromic acid, etc.

Directly hydrazine hydrate is used as an anticorrosion additive in the water circuits of thermal and nuclear plants; in refining of precious metals; in formulation of rocket fuels.

Hydrazine hydrate is also a key raw material in the production of pharmaceutical intermediates, plastic additives, herbicides and fungicides, as a reducing agent for the recovery of precious metals and in catalyst preparation. It also has uses as a chain extender in water based urethane coatings.

Hydrazine hydrate has the potential to replace hydrogen fuel cells in future. Engineers at the Daihatsu unit of Yoyota (Japan) contend that hydrazine hydrate is much better than hydrogen because it has higher output, is easier to store and deliver, has no carbon dioxide emissions, and is less expensive to use.
