Hexane (n-hexane, hexyl hydride, skellysolve B, dipropyl) is an organic compound made of the elements carbon and hydrogen; that is an alkane with six carbon atoms. The chemical formula for hexane is C6H14, and its molecular weight is 86.17 g/mol. Hexane is a colorless volatile liquid that is insoluble in water and highly flammable. It has a melting point of roughly -95.3В°C and a boiling point of 67.8В°C.
Hexane is chiefly obtained through the refining of crude oil. The exact composition of the fraction depends largely on the source of the oil (crude or reformed) and the constraints of the refining.
Most commonly, hexane is used as an edible-oil extractant for various seed crops, which are then processed into foods for humans or livestock. For example, in the 1970s, soybean oil extraction alone was estimated to account for around 30% of all uses of hexane in the U.S.
Hexane has other major uses as a cleaning solvent and as an industrial degreaser in such industries as textile manufacture, shoe and leather making, and furniture manufacturing. It is used in the printing industry as a cleaner and as a component of some inks.
Pure hexane is widely used in laboratories as an extractant for nonpolar compounds and in calibrating instruments for analyses of volatile organic compounds (VOC) or total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH).
Some 20 years ago, hexane was included in the list of chemicals on the U.S. Toxic Release Inventory (TRI). In 2001, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) issued regulations on the control of emissions of hexane gas due to its potential carcinogenic properties and environmental concerns.
Hexane market is covered in the study Hexane (CAS 110-54-3) Market Research Report 2023. The report encompasses proper description of the product, unveils application areas, and briefly summarizes patents in the sphere. It overlooks hexane market situation, names manufacturers, suppliers as well as users. The report also provides current hexane prices in the market.
