Gamma-Amino Butyric acid (GABA), formed in brain cells from glutamate, is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system (CNS) with the chemical formula C4H9NO2. It is a white microcrystalline powder stable under normal temperatures and pressures; melting at 195 В°C (dec.)(lit.) and boiling at 248 В°C. The acid regulates the neuronal excitability through CNS and also controls the muscle tone.

At present, GABA is mainly used as a dietary supplement with a calming effect or, in other words, as a natural tranquilizer. The acid is also believed to increase the Human Growth Hormone and, thereby, is very popular among the body builders. At the same time, there are some medical disagreements concerning the GABA efficiency.

GABA is taken by mouth/under the tongue and works by blocking brain signals. The GABA uptake inhibitors which are active when given orally can be formulated as liquids, for example, syrups, suspensions or emulsions, tablets, capsules and lozenges. Usually, GABA is used to relieve anxiety, improve mood, reduce symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), to treat attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as well as to promote lean muscle growth, burn fat, stabilize blood pressure and relieve pain.

Currently, GABA supplements are promoted as an alternative to tranquilizers, but medical opinion is that GABA doesn’t pass the blood brain barrier, which prevents chemicals circulating in the blood from reaching the brain. Often it is just considered to be a benign placebo. Therefore, no sufficient evidence whether GABA is useful or not is provided so far.

GABA market is covered in the study GABA (CAS 56-12-2) Market Research Report 2016. The report encompasses proper description of the product, unveils application areas, and briefly summarizes patents in the sphere. It overlooks GABA market situation, names manufacturers, suppliers as well as users. The report also provides current GABA prices in the market.
