Structure: (CAS 486-25-9)

Fluorenone (fluoren-9-one, 9-Fluorenone, 9H-Fluoren-9-one) is an aromatic organic compound with the molecular formula C13H8O and molecular weight 180.20. It occurs as yellow chips, flakes or crystalline powder. Fluorenone has a melting point of 80-83 В°C, boiling point of 342 В°C and flash point of 163 В°C. The compound is insoluble in water and soluble in oxygenated and aromatic solvents. Fluorenone is made via oxidation from fluorene.

The product is used in the production of antimalaria drugs and other pharmaceuticals. Moreover, fluorenone finds its application in metallocene catalysts as a ligand. The compound is employed in the manufacture of materials for dyes and optical brightening agents. Fluorenone demonstrates such beneficial functions as heat and corrosion resistance, conductivity, light and temperature sensitivity. Liquid crystal, molecular and luminescence chemistry, biochemorphology and organometallic-complexes industry are the key consumers of fluorenone. Its derivatives are utilized in medicine to treat or/and prevent brain and spinal injury.

Exposure to fluorenone may result in irritation of eyes, skin, the digestive or respiratory tracts. Animal studies have shown the possibility of tumors development caused by prolonged or repeated contact with the product.
