Dimethylformamide, also known as formamide, dimetilformamide, N,N-Dimethylmethanamide, etc., refers to an organic compound with the molecular formula C3H7NO and molecular weight 73.09. Dimethylformamide exists as a colorless to very slightly yellow liquid with a faint, amine-like smell. Dimethylformamide is completely miscible with water and soluble in alcohol, acetone, benzene, ether and chloroform. The boiling point of the compound is 153 В°C.

Dimethylformamide is manufactured by the catalyzed reaction of dimethylamine and carbon monoxide in methanol, by the reaction of methyl formate with dimethylamine and by the reacting dimethylamine with formic acid.

Dimethylformamide is used as selective absorbent for gases; feedstock for syntheses; solvent for plastics, wire enamels, electrolytes, sulfonamide, nitrofuran, amine chlorides, etc.; reaction medium. The compound is widely utilized in the process of polymers production and in the production of polyurethane artificial and synthetic leather. Moreover, dimethylformamide is used in the separation and refining of acetylene from crude olefin gas. The product is also used as a remover of varnish and lacquers. Dimethylformamide is utilized for the transportation of gases that are hard to liquefy and handle safely. Such gases are dissolved in dimethylformamide and then are easily and safely transported. The compound is utilized in the pharmaceutical industry. Additionally, dimethylformamide is used for the formulation of pesticides.
