Decalin, otherwise known as bicyclo[4.4.0]decane, naphthane, dekalina, perhydronaphthalene, etc., is a bicyclic organic compound that is produced by the hydrogenation of naphthalene. The compound is a colorless liquid with an aromatic smell. The molecular formula of decalin is C10H18. The product is highly soluble in methanol, chloroform, alcohol and ether. The solubility of decalin in glacial acetic acid is low. Decalin is miscible with most ketones and esters, with isopropyl alcohol and propyl.
Decalin is primarily used as a solvent for resins and/or fuel additives, for specialty applications. The product dissolves fats, oils, waxes and naphthalene. Decalin is utilized as a substitute for turpentine used in shoe polishes, waxes, lacquers. Besides, the product is also used as an industrial solvent to prepare plasticizers, dyes, insecticides; as a degreasing agent and dye carrier. Decalin finds its application in heat transfer fluid and for ore flotation.
Contact of decalin with eyes produces their acute irritation or even burns. Skin exposed to decalin will be irritated or burnt. Inhalation of the product can cause gastrointestinal irritation characterized by vomiting, nausea and diarrhea. Inhalation of decalin leads to dizziness, headaches, unconsciousness and possibly to coma. High concentrations of the product inhaled may entail the damage of kidneys, pulmonary. Overexposure to decalin leads to the damage of the target organs.
Decalin market is covered in the study Decalin (CAS 91-17-8) Market Research Report 2013. The report encompasses proper description of the product, unveils application areas, and briefly summarizes patents in the sphere. It overlooks decalin market situation, names manufacturers, suppliers as well as users. The report also provides current decalin prices in the market.
