About Clean Diesel Technologies Inc.

Catalytic Solutions, Inc. offers catalyst-based solutions for clean utilization of fossil fuels. The company focuses on the creation, manufacture and supply of emissions control catalysts for motor vehicle (gasoline and diesel engines) and energy applications (gas turbines, boilers, gensets).

Segments

Light-Duty Vehicle

The light-duty vehicle segment applies the catalyst coatings on catalytic converters for gasoline-powered passenger vehicles. Automobile catalyst suppliers use a blend of PGM – specifically rhodium, palladium and platinum. Its light-duty vehicle segment is also focused on diesel-powered vehicles.

The company has low PGM products in development and production for Honda, Renault/Nissan and aftermarket suppliers. There are also various products in the pipeline for OEMs that have excellent conversion of NOx, carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) (a process known as three-way conversion or TWC).

Heavy-Duty Diesel

The heavy-duty diesel segment includes retrofit of legacy diesel fleets with emission control systems and the emerging opportunity for new engine emission controls for off-road vehicles.

In December 2007, the company acquired Engine Control Systems (ECS), a manufacturer of technology-based emission control systems. ECS develops, manufactures and supplies a range of custom-built technology-based standard emission control products for original equipment, aftermarket and retrofit applications. The products are used for treating harmful exhaust emissions primarily in the heavy-duty diesel market.

The company has developed DOCs, NOx control catalysts and catalyzed soot filters (CSF) for light-duty diesel engines, and these are being tested by Honda, Renault/Nissan and Peugeot.

For heavy-duty diesel engines, the company is testing with Tenneco, Scania, Caterpillar, International Truck and Engine Corporation, Daimler and through the joint venture TC Catalyst Incorporated (TCC), with Isuzu, Yanmar, Komatsu, IHI and Nanshin Nainenki for the 2010-2012 model years.

H eavy-duty diesel emission control systems: Heavy-duty diesel engine emission control systems use catalysts to reduce diesel particulate matter, NOx and CO. ECS has developed and verified emission control systems for diesel particulate removal and CO reduction. ECS and Catalytic Solutions are working on DOCs, particulate filters and SCR systems for global diesel market requirements. ECS’ strength in diesel application testing and system development would establish and drive the clear performance benefits of Catalytic Solutions’ catalyst products for global growth markets.

Energy

In 2006, the company purchased Applied Utility Systems (AUS), a small, entrepreneurial engineering house that offered solutions for emission controls for power plants and industrial boilers.

Power generation plants utilize two types of catalysts in their emission control system. AUS and Catalytic Solutions offer: ammonia-based SCR catalyst systems for NOx control; and oxidation catalysts within the same system for CO and HC control.

The company has developed and owns intellectual property rights to a novel technology for creating and manufacturing catalysts known as Mixed Phase Catalyst (MPC). Its technology involves the self-assembly of a ceramic oxide matrix with catalytic metals precisely positioned within three-dimensional structures.

The MPC design gives Catalytic Solutions catalyst products two critical attributes which differentiates them from competing offerings: Superior stability that allows heat–resistant high performance with very low levels of precious metals; and Base metal activation allows base metals to be used instead of costly platinum group metals (PGM) without compromising catalytic performance.

The company’s Zero-PGM technology was targeted at diesel filters to control particulates; de-NOx catalysts for diesel and energy applications and active development under way with a major OEM on three-way catalysts for gasoline engines.

The company has operations in the USA, Canada, France, Japan and Sweden.

SWOT Analysis

SWOT, which stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats, is an analytical framework that identifies the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable for a company.

Enhanced SWOT Analysis

Enhanced SWOT is a 3×3 grid that arranges strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats into one scheme:

  • How to use the strengths to take advantage of the opportunities?
  • How to use the strengths to reduce likelihood and impact of the threats?
  • How to overcome the weaknesses that obstruct taking advantage of the opportunities?
  • How to overcome the weaknesses that can make the threats a reality?

Upon answering these questions a company can develop a project plan to improve its business performance.

PESTEL Analysis

PESTEL (also termed as PESTLE) is an ideal tool to strategically analyze what influence different outside factors – political, economic, sociocultural, technological, environmental and legal – exert on a business to later chart its long term targets.

Being part of the external analysis when carrying out a strategic assessment or performing a market study, PESTEL gives an overview of diverse macro-environmental factors that any company should thoughtfully consider. By perceiving these outside environments, businesses can maximally benefit from the opportunities while minimizing the threats to the organization.

Key Factors Examined by PESTEL Analysis:

  • Political – What opportunities and pressures are brought by political bodies and what is the degree of public regulations’ impact on the business?
  • Economic – What economic policies, trends and structures are expected to affect the organization, what is this influence’s degree?
  • Sociological – What cultural and societal aspects will work upon the demand for the business’s products and operations?
  • Technological – What impact do the technological aspects, innovations, incentives and barriers have on the organization?
  • Environmental – What environmental and ecological facets, both locally and farther afield, are likely to predetermine the business?
  • Legal – What laws and legislation will exert influence on the style the business is carried out?

IFE, EFE, IE Matrices

The Internal Factor Evaluation matrix (IFE matrix) is a strategic management tool helping audit or evaluate major weaknesses and strengths in a business’s functional areas. In addition, IFE matrix serves as a basis for identifying and assessing relationships amongst those areas. The IFE matrix is utilised in strategy formulation.

The External Factor Evaluation matrix (EFE matrix) is a tool of strategic management that is typically utilised to assess current market conditions. It is an ideal instrument for visualising and prioritising the threats and opportunities a firm is facing.

The essential difference between the above mentioned matrices lies in the type of factors incorporated in the model; whilst the latter is engaged in internal factors, the former deals exceptionally with external factors – those exposed to social, political, economic, legal, etc. external forces.

Being a continuation of the EFE matrix and IFE matrix models, the Internal External matrix (IE matrix) rests upon an investigation of external and internal business factors integrated into one suggestive model.

Porter Five Forces Analysis

The Porter’s five forces analysis studies the industry of operation and helps the company find new sources of competitive advantage. The analysis surveys an industry through five major questions:

  1. What composes a threat of substitute products and services?
  2. Is there a threat of new competitors entering the market?
  3. What is the intensity of competitive rivalry?
  4. How big is the bargaining power of buyers?
  5. How significant is the bargaining power of suppliers?

VRIO Analysis

VRIO stands for Value, Rarity, Imitability, Organization. This analysis helps to evaluate all company’s resources and capabilities and bring them together into one aggregate table that includes:

  • Tangible resources
    • Financial
    • Physical
    • Technological
    • Organizational
  • Intangible resources
