Cationic starch is a modified starch – a starch that has been chemically modified to allow the starch to function properly under conditions frequently encountered during processing or storage, like high heat, high shear, low pH, freeze-thaw and cooling. Cationic starch comes in the form of a free flowing white powder; it is odorless and insoluble in water or alcohol, with moisture content between 12-14% and up to 0.3% nitrogen. Unlike the potato, maize and tapioca native starches, cationic starch has a positively charged ion (cation) attached to it.

Cationic starch is made by treating a slurry of partially swollen granules of starch with a reactive compound, e.g. epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride. This reagent contains quaternary nitrogen, yielding a pH independent cation. The reagent usually attaches to the starch at the C6 position, which is the most accessible of the -OH groups. The typical level of derivatization is one to two charged groups per hundred glucose units.

Cationic starch is mainly used in the paper industry to improve the dry-strength properties of the finished sheet and the retention of fines and fillers.

It also finds great usage in manufacturing alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) emulsions, where it helps in reducing cost by improving the effluent quality.

In the textile industry, cationic starch is used for sizing and finishing; it is also applicable in producing of insulation materials and wall boards and laundries.
