Betulin is a cream-colored solid with the molecular formula C30H50O2 and molecular weight 442.71. The compound is slightly soluble.

Betulin is a non-bioactive precursor of betulinic acid, which possesses a raft of biological and pharmacological activities. Therefore, betulin helps to heal wounds and cut inflammation, treats melanoma and other serious diseases. Betulin is mainly used in the pharmaceutical production as raw material and in perfumery-cosmetic products as a key active ingredient. Betulin is found in the manufacturing of monomers to create a polyester polymers and compounds, industrial lubricants and additives to detergents. Betulin displays hepatoprotective, anti-tumor, gastroprotective, antioxidant, antitumorigenic and anti-viral properties. The product is used as a food additive and as an ingredient in cosmetic products such as barrier creams from solar radiation, shampoos, lotions and others. Moreover, betulin is effective in the treating for HIV and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

The compound may cause irritation and even damage of eyes in an individual. Inflammation and pre-existing dermatitis are the possible side effects caused by the contact of betulin with skin. Ingestion of betulin can produce gastrointestinal tract discomfort followed by vomiting and nausea.
