Esculin (Esculin, aesculin, Esculoside, Enallachrome, Polychrome, Bicolorin, Crataegin, Esculine, Polychrom, Escosyl, Vitamin C2, etc.) refers to a coumarin glucoside with the molecular formula C15H16O9. Esculine is a white to off-white, odorless crystalline powder. Esculin changes color depending on pH level. It changes to fluorescent blue at pH 2. It is moderately soluble in water and dissolves in methanol. Naturally esculin is derived in horse chestnut, California Buckeye, Prickly Box, daphnin and dandelion coffee.
The product provides capillary protection, preserves the integrity of the perivascular connective tissue and exhibits an antioxidant effect. Moreover, esculin is widely utilized in skin preparations for use in after sun treatments. The product is also effective means in management of cellulitis and hair growth due to its activity on skin microcirculation.
Esculine is mainly used in the pharmaceuticals and cosmetics industries. The product is similar to Vitamin P in terms of its venotonic, capillary- strengthening and antiphlogistic action. Esculin is used in venous peripheral diseases treatment.
