HPMC (Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose) is a semisynthetic, inert, viscoelastic polymer with the chemical formula C32H60O19. It is a white or beige solid/powder at room temperature. Sometimes it can have a granular texture. HPMC is almost insoluble in acetone and ethanol, but soluble in some organic solvents or water-organic components. When added to water directly, HPCM will agglomerate to dissolve later.

HPMC has a wide range of applications due to its properties. The construction materials industry is the main end-use sector of HPMC and its derivatives. HPMC has numerous functional roles when used in building materials, for example, it controls solutions and air content, improves workability and pumpability, provides stabilization and reduces sag, controls water retention and extends working time, increases strength and improves appearance. Some common materials containing HPMC include but are not limited to tile adhesives, cement renders, gypsum products. The leading manufacturer of HMPC for industrial applications is Dow Wolff Cellulosics GmbH, and two of their most popular products are Walocel and Methocel.

HPMC is also widely used in the pharmaceutical industry. The ability of HPMC to absorb water determined its extensive use in ophthalmic remedies such as a substitute for human eye tear-film, eye drops, an ocular protector and a lubricant for corneas protection during orbital surgery. In medicine it is also used as a binder and a component of tablets coating. HPMC is also widely recognized as a food additive with the Codex Alimentarius code E464. As a food additive, HPMC is used as an emulsifier, thickening and suspending agent as well as an alternative to animal gelatin. It also finds application in the manufacture of skin care products.
