Formamide (methanamide, formamid, imidoformic acid, amide, etc.) is an amide that is derived from formic acid. Formamide exists a colorless liquid with a faint ammonia smell. The product with the molecular formula CH3NO and molecular weight 45.04 is miscible with phenol, ethylene glycol, methanol, dioxane, acetic acid. Boiling point of formamide is 210 В°C. Currently, formamide is produced by the reaction of carbon monoxide and ammonia. In the past, formamide was derived from ammonium formate by heating.

Formamide is used in the production of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, sulfa drugs, herbicides and hydrocyanic acid. Furthermore, formamide is a solvent for ionic compounds, resins and plasticizers, a softener for paper and fiber. The product is used as a building block to produce 1,2,4-triazole that is an effective crop protection agent. Another use of formamide is as a constituent of cryoprotectant vitrification mixtures.

Formamide produces irritation of eyes and poses a risk of serious damage to eyes. The product is harmful if swallowed, inhaled and absorbed through the skin. Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, irritation of the gastrointestinal are the side effects produced by the formamide. The product also can cause the damage of liver and kidneys.
