1,4-naphthoquinone, a.k.a. p-Naphthoquinone, alpha-Naphthoquinone, refers to an organic compound that is derived from naphthalene. 1,4-naphthoquinone is a yellow to green powder with a benzoquinone scent. The product is insoluble in water, slightly soluble in petroleum ether. 1,4-naphthoquinone dissolves in polar organic solvents. The product has the molecular formula C10H6O2 and the molecular weight 158.15.

1,4-naphthoquinone can be produced by the aerobic oxidation of naphthalene over a vanadium oxide catalyst or by the oxidation of naphthalene with chromium trioxide.

1,4-naphthoquinone is mainly utilized as raw material for pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and other functional chemicals, and as a precursor to anthroquinone by reaction with butadiene followed by oxidation.

1,4-naphthoquinone is very toxic, corrosive, highly flammable and dangerous for the environment. It may cause severe side effects. The toxic fumes and smoke of 1,4-naphthoquinone cause eye irritation or even eye damage. The product entails inflammation and may accentuate pre-existing dermatitis condition. 1,4-naphthoquinone causes respiratory irritation and lung damage. Diseases of the airways, difficult breathing and related systemic problems are amid health hazards of 1,4-naphthoquinone.
