It is primarily used to automatically or semi-automatically identify the gingival margin, crown boundary, aligner edge position, and processing constraints based on 3D dental models, treatment stage models, and dental arch geometry data. It generates cutting lines, trimming curves, and processing path files that can be used for manual guidance, CNC milling, five-axis cutting, robotic trimming, or laser cutting.

From a demand structure perspective, growth is mainly driven by three directions: large-scale production in dental laboratories requires reducing fluctuations in manual trimming; in-clinic aligner production requires reducing reliance on technicians; and large clear aligner brands need to improve automation, non-contact cutting, and edge consistency. At the industry dynamics level, Align's acquisition of exocad represents a large clear aligner company extending into the CAD/CAM software ecosystem. While exocad is not equivalent to trimming software, it illustrates that software control in the digital orthodontic manufacturing chain is becoming increasingly important.
