They provide a high-speed swirling field to the incoming liquid through a tangential inlet, causing the lighter oil droplets to coalesce towards the low-pressure zone at the axis and flow out through the overflow outlet, while the denser wastewater and solid particles are thrown towards the wall and discharged through the bottom outlet. There are no rotating parts throughout the process, and the initial separation of oil, water, and solid phases is achieved by the flow field itself. A single unit can process several to hundreds of cubic meters per hour. Multiple units are often connected in parallel to form a skid. It is a core piece of equipment for replacing traditional oil separators on offshore platforms and onshore joint stations, and is also used in the pretreatment lines for fracturing flowback fluid and drilling mud oil removal.
