Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) Liquid Hydrogen refers to liquefied hydrogen produced through the steam methane reforming process, a widely used industrial method for hydrogen production. In this process, methane—primarily from natural gas—reacts with high-temperature steam in the presence of a catalyst to produce hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The generated synthesis gas then undergoes a water–gas shift reaction to increase hydrogen yield, followed by purification and liquefaction to produce liquid hydrogen. Liquid hydrogen produced via SMR is widely used in industrial hydrogen supply chains, including petroleum refining, ammonia and methanol production, electronics manufacturing, and emerging hydrogen energy applications. Compared with gaseous hydrogen, liquid hydrogen offers higher energy density and more efficient long-distance transportation and storage. Although SMR remains the dominant hydrogen production pathway due to its mature technology and cost advantages, environmental considerations are encouraging the integration of carbon capture technologies and the gradual transition toward low-carbon hydrogen production methods.
