A Para-Ortho Hydrogen Converter for Hydrogen Liquefaction is a cryogenic catalytic conversion device installed in the low-temperature process section of a hydrogen liquefaction plant, used to promote the conversion of para-hydrogen into ortho-hydrogen during the stepwise cooling process so that hydrogen reaches a higher proportion of the low-temperature equilibrium ortho-hydrogen composition. Hydrogen at ambient temperature mainly exists as ortho-hydrogen, and as hydrogen is cooled toward liquefaction temperature, the equilibrium composition gradually shifts toward para-hydrogen. The natural conversion of ortho-hydrogen to para-hydrogen releases heat; if sufficient conversion is not achieved before liquefaction, the released conversion heat will cause continuous evaporation and storage losses of liquid hydrogen. Therefore, the para-ortho hydrogen converter is a critical cryogenic process equipment in liquid hydrogen production systems.

The product mainly consists of a cryogenic pressure-bearing shell, catalyst bed, gas distribution structure, heat exchange channels, support components, cryogenic insulation structure, temperature and pressure measurement interfaces, and safety control components. Major product configurations include independent multi-temperature-zone catalyst bed converters, multi-stage series converters, isothermal catalytic converters, continuous catalytic conversion heat exchangers, catalyst-filled plate-fin heat exchangers, and para-ortho hydrogen conversion modules integrated into hydrogen liquefaction cold boxes. The equipment is typically designed as a customized system according to hydrogen processing capacity, liquefaction process, precooling method, refrigeration cycle, and target para-hydrogen concentration.

The technical process involves installing catalytic conversion beds or catalytic heat exchange channels in different temperature zones during the gradual cooling of hydrogen from ambient temperature to approximately 20 K, allowing the ortho-hydrogen and para-hydrogen composition to approach the equilibrium state corresponding to each temperature while using external refrigeration media or heat exchange surfaces to promptly remove the heat released during the conversion reaction. Key specifications include hydrogen processing capacity, design temperature, design pressure, catalyst loading, bed pressure drop, outlet para-hydrogen concentration, conversion efficiency, heat exchange efficiency, hydrogen leakage rate, equipment cold loss, and continuous operating time. Its core functions are to reduce energy consumption during the liquefaction process, minimize evaporation losses during liquid hydrogen storage, improve liquid hydrogen product stability, and ensure long-term continuous operation of hydrogen liquefaction systems. Ortho para hydrogen converters occupy a technically critical but relatively narrow position in the liquid hydrogen equipment value chain.
