3M always has its name in the top when it comes to innovation. The R&D expenses increased 4.1% in 2012 compared to 2011 and increased 9.5% in 2011 compared to 2010. 3M manufactures its advanced wound care dressings under the brand name Tegaderm. 3M began the work on inventing Tegaderm film dressing back in 1978. Three years later, the first test product was launched in the US and in 1987 became the market leader in transparent film dressings.
Having more than 30 years of experience in the wound care market, 3M still continues to innovate and bring in more products into the wound care market. This section describes the product portfolio of 3M in 2013.
3M Tegaderm Hydrocolloid Dressing: Consists of thin polyurethane membrane coated with layer of acrylic adhesive. Permeable to oxygen and water vapour, but impermeable to bacteria and virus. It is indicated for use on minor burns, skin and pressure ulcers and acute wounds.
• 3M Tegaderm Foam Dressing: Made up of polyurethane foam pad and additional absorbent non woven layer. Bordered by transparent adhesive film
• 3M Tegaderm Alginate Dressing: Derived from pure Scottish seaweed. Soft in texture and absorbs more than its own weight. Indicated for chronic and acute wounds.
• 3M Tegaderm Alginate Ag Dressing: Highly absorbent, sterile dressing composed of calcium alginate. Indicated for chronic and acute wounds.
• 3M Tegaderm Hydrogel Dressing: Provides moist healing and promotes debridement. Indicated for minimally draining partial and full thickness dermal wounds.
• 3M Tegaderm Film Dressings: Transparent film dressing providing water resistant breathable barrier to external contaminants.
