A general-purpose inductive encoder is a non-contact position feedback device that converts rotary angle, linear displacement, or shaft position into electrical or digital position signals by using electromagnetic induction, eddy-current sensing, or transformer-like coupling. A typical system consists of a stator or readhead, a rotor or metallic target, PCB coils, signal-conditioning electronics, output interfaces, and mechanical mounting components. General-purpose inductive encoders represent a fast-growing but still relatively specialized technology within the broader encoder market. Their key advantages include non-contact operation, robustness against contamination, vibration and shock, strong immunity to stray magnetic fields, and easy PCB-based integration.
