A Belt Tension Meter is a specialized instrument used to measure installation tension, pretension, or static tension condition in belt-driven transmission systems. It is primarily used for assembly, maintenance, inspection, and preventive troubleshooting of belt drives. The product is commonly designed as a portable handheld device, typically consisting of a compact main unit with a display, together with an integrated or external probe, microphone or optical sensor, keypad module, and battery power supply. Higher-end models may additionally provide memory, PC interface, software support, or wireless communication. By operating principle, the product can be grouped into mechanical deflection-force types, acoustic frequency types, optical frequency types, and online monitoring types. Mechanical models judge tension from the force required at a specified belt deflection, while acoustic or optical digital models measure the belt’s natural vibration frequency and convert it into tension using belt mass and span-length parameters. The product is intended to prevent under-tension, which may cause slip, lower efficiency, and abnormal wear, and also over-tension, which may shorten the life of bearings, shafts, and belts. It is suitable for V-belts, ribbed belts, timing belts, flat belts, and related drive belts, and is widely used in industrial machinery, automotive accessory drives, conveying systems, HVAC installations, agricultural machinery, construction equipment, and equipment reliability programs.

Growing requirements for machinery reliability, preventive maintenance, and standardized assembly are driving the shift from subjective belt adjustment to quantifiable measurement. Traditional “by feel” adjustments are increasingly inadequate for high-speed, high-load, and long-life applications.
