Manufacturing Process and Market Trends:

The main manufacturing process for smartphone power management chips revolves around the BCD process. Integrating Bipolar CMOS and DMOS terminals onto a single substrate eliminates the need for separate wafers for high-voltage drive and high-precision analog and digital control. Advanced nodes have progressed from 180nm to 12nm FinFET. Flagship SoCs rely on TSMC and Samsung's 12nm and 22nm BCD processes to reduce area and static power consumption for their external PMICs. Mid-to-low-end chips remain at mature nodes of 90 to 130nm. High-voltage BCD above 70V is reserved for DC-DC charge pumps, LDOs, and fast charging protocols. Advanced packaging, such as WLCSP, FCCSP, and SiP stacking, reduces passive component mounting area by 30%. Multiphase Buck and charge pump architectures handle the instantaneous peak loads of 200MP cameras, 5G millimeter-wave, and AI NPUs.

The global market share is nearly 60% captured by Qualcomm and MediaTek through their bundled PMIC and SoC sales model. On the independent PMIC side, TI Dialog has been acquired by Renesas, NXP Maxim has been acquired by ADI, and Sanbang Technology, Xidi Microelectronics, and Silergy are squeezing out the market in the south. On the Apple side, Apple has cut most of the Dialog market share in its self-developed PMIC and is now working with TSMC. Android flagships are focusing on 200W and above charge pump fast charging and satellite communication standby optimization. Foldable screens with multiple screens, multiple cameras, and multiple hinge motors have increased the number of PMICs from three or four to seven or eight. Orders from automotive-grade and AI PCs are being fed back to mobile phone PMIC manufacturers for BCD capacity reuse. After domestic substitution has gained a foothold in the mid-range Android market, it has begun to approach the threshold of flagship main PMICs, but the yield rate of high-end BCD IP and automotive-grade AEC-Q100 is still a hurdle.
