Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) EML Laser is a high-speed optical device that tightly integrates an Electro-Absorption Modulated Laser (EML) with its driver IC and optical interface within a single package or optical engine. In traditional optical modules, the laser, modulator, and driver are physically separated on the PCB, which introduces significant signal loss, degraded signal integrity, and increased power consumption at high data rates. In contrast, CPO EML Laser brings the InP-based EML chip and high-speed driver into a shared package, enabling optical signals to be directly coupled into the fiber with minimal electrical interconnect length. This architecture significantly reduces insertion loss, lowers power consumption, and improves signal fidelity. Additionally, CPO design supports much higher data rates—such as 400G, 800G, and 1.6T—as well as higher port density, making it suitable for large-scale data centers and 5G high-speed fronthaul and backhaul networks. The core of this technology lies in co-designing high-density optical and electrical integration, along with precise thermal management and high-speed interconnect design, to achieve high performance, low power, and reliable operation. As a result, CPO EML Lasers are considered a key enabling technology to meet the increasing bandwidth demands of next-generation optical interconnects.
