Type II radical photoinitiators (also known as hydrogen-abstraction photoinitiators) are key additives in UV-curable materials. Upon absorbing ultraviolet light, they do not undergo direct cleavage; instead, they engage in a bimolecular reaction with a co-initiator (hydrogen donor) in the system, abstracting a hydrogen atom to generate active radicals that initiate resin polymerization and curing.

Upstream raw materials primarily include aromatic ketones, substituted benzenes, benzoyl chloride, sulfur-containing aromatic intermediates, ketocoumarin intermediates, camphorquinone intermediates, alkylating agents, oxidizing agents, and refined solvents. The critical factors lie not in the scarcity of bulk raw materials, but rather in intermediate purity, color control, residual impurities, odor, and regulatory compliance. Benzophenones offer relatively low costs and are suitable for general-purpose UV-curing systems, whereas thioxanthones exhibit superior long-wavelength absorption, making them better suited for pigmented inks, thick-film applications, and LED-curing systems. Downstream, they are typically formulated in combination with acrylate monomers, oligomers, amine co-initiators, and Type I photoinitiators; their value is largely derived from formulation compatibility and application validation.
