Thiol-terminated monomers, also referred to as polythiol monomers or mercapto-functional monomers, are multifunctional compounds containing two or more terminal thiol groups. They participate in polymerization, crosslinking or curing reactions through thiol-ene, thiol-yne, thiol-epoxy, thiol-isocyanate and radical chain-transfer mechanisms. Typical products include mercaptopropionate esters, mercaptoacetate esters, thioether-rich optical thiol monomers, secondary thiol monomers and multifunctional thiol crosslinkers. These materials are used to improve curing speed, adhesion, oxygen inhibition resistance, flexibility, refractive index, low-temperature epoxy curing and network formation in UV-curable coatings, inks, adhesives, optical resins, electronic encapsulants, dental materials, 3D printing resins, hydrogels and specialty polymer systems.

Based on our research, thiol-terminated monomers are key functional materials used in thiol-click chemistry, UV curing, high-refractive-index optical resins and low-temperature epoxy curing systems. Their value does not come from a single compound but from a family of multifunctional materials containing two or more terminal thiol groups. Major product families include mercaptopropionate esters, mercaptoacetate esters, thioether-rich optical thiol monomers, secondary thiol monomers and polymercaptan-type curing materials. Compared with conventional acrylate or epoxy monomers, thiol-terminated monomers offer faster reaction rates, lower shrinkage, oxygen-inhibition resistance, stronger adhesion, refractive-index enhancement and low-temperature curing capability.
