Rail sintered brake pads, also known as powder metallurgy brake pads, are disc-brake friction components for rail vehicles made from copper-based, iron-based or Cu-Fe composite powders, together with graphite, ceramic particles, tin powder, friction modifiers and solid lubricants, through powder mixing, pressing, sintering, machining and backing-plate assembly. Their market value lies in stable friction performance, fade resistance, wear durability and safety under high-speed, high-load and frequent braking conditions. Key upstream materials include copper powder, iron powder, graphite, ceramic powders, tin powder, steel back plates, sintering auxiliaries and powder-metallurgy equipment. Major downstream markets include high-speed trains, EMUs, intercity rail, metro, light rail, locomotives, heavy-haul freight trains and rail aftermarket maintenance.

Rail sintered brake pads are high-performance friction braking components used in railway disc brake systems. They are typically manufactured from copper-based, iron-based, bronze-based, or composite metallic powders combined with graphite, ceramic particles, lubricants, abrasives, and friction modifiers through pressing, high-temperature sintering, machining, and backing-plate bonding. They are mainly installed on high-speed trains, intercity trains, locomotives, and selected passenger or freight rolling stock equipped with disc brake systems, working against the brake disc to provide service braking, stopping, emergency braking, and auxiliary braking. Compared with organic or resin-based railway brake pads, sintered brake pads generally offer stronger high-temperature resistance, wear resistance, wet-condition braking stability, and high-energy braking capability, making them suitable for high-speed, high-load, frequent-braking, long-gradient, and harsh-climate railway operations.

By vehicle type and braking scenario, rail sintered brake pads can be segmented into high-speed train sintered brake pads, intercity or regional train sintered brake pads, locomotive sintered brake pads, passenger-coach disc-brake sintered pads, freight-wagon disc-brake sintered pads, and special railway-vehicle sintered pads. High-speed train applications impose the strictest requirements on braking energy absorption, thermal stability, friction-coefficient consistency, brake-disc thermal-crack control, and high-speed braking safety. Locomotive and heavy-duty railway applications focus more on high load capacity, long service life, and maintenance intervals, while passenger and regional trains place greater emphasis on braking stability, noise control, wet-condition performance, and life-cycle cost. UIC certification documents include a category for sintered brake pads used on high-speed trains up to 320 km/h with maximum braking energy of 17.8 MJ, indicating that sintered pads are an important technology route for high-speed railway disc braking.

By material system, copper-based sintered brake pads are widely used in high-speed train and high-performance disc brake applications because of their thermal conductivity, friction stability, and brake-disc compatibility. Iron-based sintered materials offer higher strength and wear resistance and are suitable for selected high-load and heavy-duty braking scenarios. Copper-iron composite, low-copper, and copper-free sintered materials are becoming important upgrade directions under environmental regulation, particulate-emission control, and sustainability requirements. The performance of sintered brake pads depends not only on friction-material formulation, but also on sintering temperature, pore structure, backing-plate bonding strength, tribofilm formation, brake-disc material, braking pressure, operating speed, and heat dissipation conditions.
