Indium Phosphide Laser Diode Chips are III-V compound semiconductor light-source chips fabricated on InP-based epitaxial platforms and processed through epitaxy, lithography, etching, regrowth, metallization, cleaving, facet coating and chip-level testing. This study focuses on edge-emitting InP laser chips used in optical communication and optoelectronic systems, including FP laser chips, DFB/DML laser chips, EML chips, CW DFB laser chips, tunable laser chips, DFB laser arrays and selected integrated InP light-source chips. Key specifications typically include operating wavelength, modulation speed, optical output power, linewidth, threshold current, slope efficiency, side-mode suppression ratio, extinction ratio, relative intensity noise, operating temperature range and long-term reliability. Major applications include data-center optical interconnects, AI cluster transceivers, PON access networks, 5G fronthaul, metro and long-haul transmission, coherent communication, silicon photonics external light sources, co-packaged optics, optical test and measurement, gas sensing and selected LiDAR use cases.

Based on our research, the InP laser chip industry should be understood as a high-reliability III-V semiconductor light-source segment rather than a simple optical transceiver component market. Its key barriers are concentrated in InP epitaxy, DFB grating formation, regrowth, EML monolithic integration, facet coating, yield control and long-term reliability qualification. Traditional telecom, PON and 5G fronthaul applications continue to provide a stable demand base, but the main incremental value is now being created by AI data-center interconnects, 800G and 1.6T transceivers, silicon photonics external light sources and co-packaged optics. Since high-speed EMLs and high-power CW DFB lasers carry much higher chip-level value than conventional FP or low-speed DFB products, the market?s revenue mix is shifting from high-volume low-ASP chips toward high-speed, high-power and high-reliability light-source chips. The official product roadmaps of leading suppliers show that InP remains a critical enabling platform for high-speed optical interconnects.

From a demand and technology standpoint, 2025?2026 marks a transition period in which AI infrastructure, 800G deployment and 1.6T development are becoming the most important growth drivers. EMLs remain crucial for high-speed pluggable optics, while silicon photonics and CPO architectures are increasing the strategic value of low-noise, high-power CW DFB sources and DFB laser arrays. Lumentum?s acquisition of Cloud Light strengthened its position in high-speed data-center optical components, while Furukawa Electric?s high-output DFB laser diode chip expansion reflects rising demand for external light sources used in silicon photonics, ELSFP and CPO architectures. Coherent?s InP optoelectronics portfolio, including 100G and 200G EML chips, also indicates that advanced InP light sources remain central to next-generation 800G, 1.6T and higher-speed optical links. From a supply-chain perspective, these developments suggest that competition is moving beyond conventional telecom DFB and FP chips toward high-power CW DFB, high-speed EML, laser arrays and chip-level light-source platforms.
