1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, commonly abbreviated as [EMIM][TFSI] or [EMIM][NTf?], is a hydrophobic room-temperature ionic liquid composed of an 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium cation and a bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide anion. It is used as a high-performance ionic liquid for electrochemical electrolytes, battery and supercapacitor research, CO?-soluble reaction media, electrodeposition, non-volatile solvents, lubricants/additives, antistatic systems and advanced materials R&D. TCI lists the product as a liquid with CAS 174899-82-2, purity above 98%, and the synonym EMIMTFSI; FUJIFILM Wako lists the same CAS and identifies FUJIFILM Wako Pure Chemical Corporation as manufacturer for its organic synthesis grade.

Based on our research, EMIM-TFSI should be modeled as a high-purity imidazolium TFSI ionic liquid, not as a generic solvent or the entire ionic-liquids market. It is a room-temperature ionic liquid composed of a 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium cation and a bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide anion. Its value proposition comes from low vapor pressure, high thermal stability, good ionic conductivity and a wide electrochemical window. Sigma-Aldrich describes [EMIM][N(Tf)?] as a room-temperature ionic liquid and notes that it is useful as a non-aqueous solvent for electrochemical investigations because of these properties; the same source also notes its good CO? solubility.

From an application perspective, EMIM-TFSI is mainly relevant to battery and supercapacitor electrolytes, electrodeposition, electrochemical-interface studies, CO? capture and separation, green reaction media, ion gels, lubricants and functional-fluid additives. In battery development, it is usually not a one-for-one replacement for carbonate electrolytes; rather, it is used as a non-volatile, safer, high-temperature or wide-window electrolyte component. In supercapacitors and interface electrochemistry, it is often used as a stable model electrolyte or high-voltage electrolyte medium.
