Autogenous mills are so-called due to the self-grinding of the ore: a rotating drum throws larger rocks of ore in a cascading motion which causes impact breakage of larger rocks and compressive grinding of finer particles. It is similar in operation to a SAG mill as described below but does not use steel balls in the mill. A semi-autogenous mill (SAG mill) is a type of grinding mill used in mineral processing that combines the features of autogenous grinding with the use of steel balls as grinding media. In a SAG mill, the ore itself is broken down through impact and attrition as it tumbles inside a rotating drum, while a small percentage of steel balls is added to enhance the grinding efficiency. This combination allows the mill to handle a wide variety of ore types and hardness levels, making it ideal for primary grinding in large-scale mining operations. SAG mills are typically used in the first stage of the grinding circuit, where they reduce the size of the ore before it is sent to ball mills or other secondary grinding equipment for further processing.
