During the charging process, heat is stored by circulating the hot fluid, while during discharge, the cooler fluid is drawn through the tank, absorbing the stored heat. Thermocline systems are cost-effective due to the use of a single tank and low-cost filler materials, making them suitable for applications like concentrated solar power plants and industrial heat management, where efficient, large-scale thermal storage is needed.
