Silicon-carbon anodes offer advantages such as high initial efficiency and low cost. However, their significant expansion force has historically impacted cycle life. Mechanical ball milling significantly improves the electrochemical performance of the material, is simple, and allows for large-scale production. However, the agglomeration of silicon particles during milling leads to poor cycle performance. Silicon-carbon anodes produced by mechanical ball milling are also called silicon-oxygen anodes.

CVD utilizes a porous carbon framework to store silicon and buffers the volume expansion during lithium intercalation through the internal pores of the porous carbon. This results in low expansion rates, excellent cycle life, and the low density and light weight of the carbon framework itself, leading to high energy density. CVD-based silicon-carbon anodes paired with porous carbon substrates effectively improve expansion rate and cycle life issues. Their leading performance and significant development potential make them a mainstream next-generation silicon-carbon process.

Porous carbon forms the carbon framework of silicon-carbon anodes, possessing advantages such as high specific surface area, controllable microstructure, abundant pore structure, good conductivity, and high stability. The high specific surface area allows porous carbon to bind more lithium ions, providing high capacity for lithium-ion batteries. The multidimensional and complex pore structure provides effective and rapid diffusion channels for lithium ions, resulting in excellent electrochemical performance.

The mainstream raw materials for porous carbon in CVD silicon-carbon anodes include biomass, resin-based, and coke-based materials. Among these three routes, biomass raw materials include coconut shells, bamboo, rice husks, wood chips, and starch, which are renewable. Resin raw materials are mainly phenolic resins, with mature production processes, controllable chemical structures, and better pore uniformity and batch consistency, but the raw material cost is higher. Due to the relatively cheaper raw material price of biomass, the cost per ton for resin-based porous carbon is significantly higher than that for bio-based porous carbon. Petroleum coke-based materials fall between these two categories, combining cost and strength.

The core of porous carbon production technology is the pore-forming process, primarily achieved through steam or alkali activation. This involves mixing an activator with a carbon precursor under high-temperature, inert gas protection to initiate a pore-forming reaction. Generally, this requires first carbonizing the carbon precursor at high temperatures (typically above 800°C), followed by the use of steam or alkali as an activator to react with the carbon precursor and achieve the pore-forming reaction.

In 2025, the global production of porous carbon for CVD silicon-carbon anodes was approximately 1637 tons, with a unit price of approximately US$32,270 per ton and a gross profit margin of approximately 24.57%.
