Frequency regulation energy storage refers to an application method in which energy storage devices are used to assist the power grid in maintaining frequency stability in the power system.

Frequency regulation energy storage systems are usually composed of energy storage devices (such as batteries, flywheels, compressed air energy storage, etc.), converters (used for conversion between electrical energy and chemical energy and mechanical energy) and control systems. When the grid frequency drops (indicating that power demand exceeds supply), the energy storage system will release energy, supply power to the grid, and increase supply; conversely, when the grid frequency rises (indicating an oversupply of power), the energy storage system will absorb excess energy, store it, and reduce supply. This process can be carried out very quickly, and the response time is usually between a few seconds and tens of milliseconds, which is much faster than the adjustment speed of traditional generator sets.
