Flywheel energy storage devices are mechanical systems that store electricity as rotational kinetic energy by using a motor to accelerate a rotor (flywheel) to high speed and later converting that stored motion back into electricity by operating the same machine as a generator. To reduce losses, the rotor is typically supported by low-friction bearings (often magnetic or advanced mechanical designs) and housed in a sealed low-pressure or vacuum enclosure, while power electronics manage fast charging and discharging with sub-second response. Flywheels excel where high power, rapid response, and very frequent cycling are needed—such as grid frequency regulation, power-quality and UPS ride-through, and regenerative braking energy capture—but they generally provide shorter-duration energy storage than batteries and require robust containment and safety engineering because of the high rotational speeds involved. Carbon-composite flywheel rotors cost about $1,200 per kWh of stored energy, while high-strength steel rotors designed for very high cycle life cost roughly $1,800–$4,000 per kWh depending on the steel grade and strength.

Upstream, flywheel energy storage devices draw on suppliers of high-strength rotor materials (alloy steels or carbon-fiber composites and resins), precision machining or filament-winding and curing services, hubs/shafts and high-speed fasteners, bearing systems (mechanical or magnetic) plus sensors and control electronics, vacuum vessels and seals, motor-generator machines, power electronics (rectifiers/inverters, DC-link capacitors, protection devices), thermal management hardware, and high-integrity containment and certification/testing services. Downstream, flywheel OEMs and system integrators package single units or modular banks with controls and monitoring software and deploy them for grid ancillary services (frequency regulation and fast reserve), power quality and UPS ride-through in data centers and industrial facilities, rail and industrial regenerative-braking capture, microgrids and renewable smoothing, and other critical infrastructure, then provide commissioning, operations support, preventative maintenance, and end-of-life refurbishment or recycling of metals, composites, magnets, and electronics.
