China’s Li-ion battery market has developed at breakneck pace in recent years, fuelled by the rise of the mobile phone, the tablet, and more lately the electric vehicle and energy storage industries.

Up to this point, Chinese manufacturers have used cost advantages to grab market share from their competitors in Japan, Korea and the US, but their long-term future is still uncertain as they struggle to close the R&D gap between themselves and their international competitors. Industry consolidation is also sure to accelerate over the next few years.

China Li-ion Battery E-News will help you stay ahead of the game in this fast-changing market with real-time reporting on the entire Li-ion battery industry chain, from lithium ore and brine markets through anode and cathode materials and electrolyte to the downstream consumer electronics, EV and energy storage markets. This includes:
  • Breaking news from China and abroad
  • The latest market data, including price information for raw materials, intermediates and end products, import/export data, production, consumption, operating rates, etc.
  • In-depth analysis of market trends, Chinese government policy, the performance of leading Chinese producers, M&A, new technologies, and more
  • Expert commentary from industry insiders, including regular guest articles and interviews with insiders at leading Chinese manufacturers, associations and government organizations

According to the data, in H1 of 2020, the market scale of ternary cathode materials for li-ion batteries in China was USD1.65 billion (RMB11.33 billion), a YoY decrease of 13.80%; the shipment volume was 86,000 tonnes, down by 4.20% YoY.

On 7 Sept., Tesla (China) launched battery recycling service on its official website. The business enjoys a broad market in China.

On 18 Sept., the Statistical Society for Foreign Economic Relations and Trade of China released the Research Report on China's Top 500 Foreign Trade Companies in 2020. According to the report, in H1 of this year, China's total export value of chemicals decreased by 1.60% YoY.

The first phase of the 100,000 t/a cathode material project of Leyou New Energy with a capacity of 45,000 t/a has been completed. The company plans to reach the full production capacity of 45,000 t/a in Q3 of next year.

On 2 Sept., the ternary precursor giant GEM signed a strategic purchase agreement with HPAL. After securing the upstream cobalt resources supply, GEM continued to work on stable supply of nickel resources.

Affected by multiple factors, the operating revenue of Tianqi Lithium in H1 of 2020 decreased by 27.44% YoY, and its net profit attributable to shareholders of listed companies dropped by 460.15% YoY.

At the end of Aug., Fengyuan Chemical, BTR and Huayou Cobalt successively released their semiannual reports, according to which, the precursor business of Huayou Cobalt achieved increases; the total revenue of BRT saw a YoY decline; the revenue of the cathode material business of Fengyuan Chemical has declined.

In Aug., the installed capacity of power batteries in China was about 5.12 GWh, a YoY increase of 48.70% and a MoM growth of 2.70%.

In Sept., the price of cathode materials was basically stable. In Oct., the power battery market is expected to show upward tendency. As the demand for ternary cathode materials grows, the price of ternary materials is expected to rise.

In Sept., the price of anode materials decreased slightly; the price of electrolyte rose, and that of separators remained basically stable. It is expected that the price of anode materials and other materials will remain stable in the short term, or will see a slight change.
