A switched-mode power supply (SMPS) regulates via high-frequency switching of power devices and energy transfer through inductors/transformers, enabling higher efficiency, higher power density, and wider input/output ranges across external adapters, industrial and telecom supplies, server/data-center power, and embedded DC-DC modules, while requiring stronger EMI mitigation, thermal design, safety compliance, and reliability engineering. Many systems combine SMPS pre-regulation with linear post-regulation or filtering to balance efficiency with ultra-low-noise outputs.

Globally, combined 2025 commercial shipments of linear and switching power supplies are estimated at approximately 1.8 to 3.2 billion units, with SMPS accounting for the vast majority of both volume and revenue, while linear supplies remain concentrated in low-noise and lower-power niches. On an FOB basis, unit pricing typically shows a strong power-tier structure: low-power external adapters and general-purpose DC-DC modules commonly fall in the US$1–8 per unit range, mid-power industrial and telecom supplies are often US$10–60 per unit, and higher-power server and industrial chassis supplies are more frequently US$80–300 per unit, depending on efficiency class, redundancy, and compliance requirements.

Against the backdrop of accelerating electrification and digital infrastructure build-out, linear and switching power supplies remain the fundamental enablers of stable DC power. SMPS solutions dominate many high-growth domains—data centers and communications equipment, industrial automation, and external adapters—because higher efficiency and power density translate directly into smaller form factors and lower thermal burden. At the same time, linear supplies continue to hold strong engineering relevance in low-noise and low-ripple applications such as test & measurement and sensitive analog front ends, where clean rails and predictable EMI behavior are prioritized. Energy-efficiency regulation and market-access requirements, especially for external power supplies, are tightening product expectations around active-mode efficiency, no-load consumption, and compliant marking, reinforcing the momentum toward high-efficiency SMPS architectures, PFC adoption, and system-level optimization.
