In-Vitro Diagnostics (IVD) comprise medical products and technologies used outside the human body to examine blood, urine, tissue, saliva and other human specimens through diagnostic reagents, analytical instruments, calibrators, controls and supporting software. They provide information for disease screening, diagnosis, treatment selection, therapeutic monitoring, prognosis and health management. Major fields include clinical chemistry, immunodiagnostics, molecular diagnostics, hematology, coagulation testing, microbiology, pathology and point-of-care testing. Applications extend from central and hospital laboratories to emergency departments, primary-care facilities and home settings. This scope includes instruments, reagents and related consumables, while excluding testing services provided by independent clinical laboratories.

Population aging, chronic-disease management, precision oncology and infectious-disease control are expanding the need for diagnostic testing, while clinical decisions increasingly depend on measurable biomarkers. As molecular testing, digital pathology and companion diagnostics become more deeply integrated into care pathways, IVD is evolving from a tool for confirming disease into a clinical-information platform supporting screening, classification, treatment selection and follow-up. The expansion of primary care and point-of-care testing is also moving diagnostics beyond large laboratories toward emergency departments, clinics and patients, creating new opportunities for portable and rapid-testing systems.

The industry must manage pricing pressure, evolving regulation and rapid technological change. Because test results directly influence clinical decisions, manufacturers must continuously demonstrate analytical performance, clinical performance, lot consistency and specimen suitability, supported by quality systems covering production, distribution, laboratory use and post-market surveillance.
